Duet Night Abyss

The only water character you get for free has a bad French accent and constantly talks about “love” while sounding like Pepe le Pew. She seems both aggravating and innocuous. Then if you level her up and check her lore, she’s a fucking serial killer.

Oh hey, Duet Night Abyss has a non-evil multiple! Yale and Oliver. They have zero plot relevance, but I think they’re written okay.

We haven’t learned shit since the Holocaust. We haven’t learned shit since 1492. We haven’t learned shit since the first time some Neanderthal went “those other Neanderthals standing over there are secretly plotting to kill us, so we need to kill them first (and steal all their stuff!)” So I once more say FUCK YOU to every idealistic sci-fi writer who thought humanity would someday reach a point where we learned shit.

I’m playing Back to the Dawn

I haven’t unlocked the third playable character yet, but I’ll be disappointed if it’s not Bam. Bob and Thomas are in a noir story, and meanwhile Bam is trying to stop a cult from summoning Shub-Niggurath.

Tape Notes: "Psychobiology of Trauma," by Bessel A. van der Kolk

This tape (05-834-93) comes from the 5th east regional Conference on Abuse and Multiple Personality: Training and Treatment June 3-8, 1993 at the Radisson Hotel in Alexandria, VA. It was mercifully normal and boring! It is also not really my wheelhouse, so once I digitize it, I'm happy to give it to someone who'd appreciate it more; I know there are some van der Kolk fans on this blog. Let me know!

Also keep in mind I'm inking comics when I'm listening to these tapes, so my notes tend to be haphazard. When in doubt, assume the problem was me, not the speaker!

Paraphrasing an interesting Youtube comment by echigokurogane8612: in a lot of gacha games, the characters worth using are four-stars, five-stars, and six-stars. Four-stars are made marketable by being cheap. Six-stars are made marketable by being the best. So there's a recurring pattern where five-stars are made marketable by having the sexiest outfits.

Leslie Feinberg and 'Safe Space'

Rogan: We found a copy of Leslie Feinberg's 1996 book, Transgender Warriors: making history from Joan of Arc to Dennis Rodman, in a free box. (It's still in print, miraculously!) If you desperately need a book where all sorts of genderful people are exhorted to unite in joyful coalition, then this is the book for you! But that's not what this post is about. This post is specifically about what Feinberg says about safe space, which I want to make required reading for everyone these days.

There are no safe identities, only safe behavior. )

I’m annoyed at fiction again

I hate characters who think being powerful makes them interesting. This dragon character talks about how she can kill armies, and I’m thinking “You aren’t killing armies; you’re sitting in a swamp doing nothing.”

I’m reading Bog Standard Isekai

“Dating and courtship were very formal in this town. They didn’t trust in accidents of proximity; you had to go through the proper channels. It started with a conversation with the parents, and then every outing would be heavily supervised . . . He had no interest in actually courting Zilly, but if he didn’t go through those channels, hanging around her at all would be seen as highly suspect.“

This is the kind of worldbuilding idea I never include in my stories, because to me it feels so dystopian that any story containing it would end up being a story about it. Sometimes I’m reminded that this is something that happened in real life, that still happens in some places, and I just want to scream.

Gay Genders

Mori: Okay, so, when we came of age, queerwise, there was this idea that trans people and gay people were two very different groups of people. Sure, maybe in those ignorant old days, the two were conflated, but that was wrong and now we are enlightened and know these are two totally different things (and also maybe we should not trust each other or affiliate with each other because trannies will make the gays look bad and cisgays are all privileged dipshits or whatever). This blog shows that history; "queerness" and "trans" are totally different tags because when we started using them, they were TREATED as completely different things.

But as we've been reading our older queer books, we're realizing that this plain isn't true! Gay people were gendering ALL OVER THE PLACE, and homogenizing them into "cis gay" ranges from misleading to outright insulting.

We are still fucking sick, so we're sticking with posting notes from the stuff we've read. Even we can't mess that up too bad!

Still playing Duet Night Abyss

The garbage collector is fun to play, and it's cool how she shouts out which enemies are recyclable and which are burnable waste. But I'm starting to realize her combat skills are rubbish.

The Coco posts have me feeling some kind of way, because OP didn’t convince me Coco is pro-abuse, and I certainly didn’t think all these other viewers are normalizing abuse by not interpreting it the same way. But then I read the reblogs, and they bring up parts of the movie OP didn’t mention, and holy shit you could actually read this as pro-abuse.

Sickblogging

Mori: me, Rogan, and Sneak are still sick and contagious, but we are gonna mask up and drag our plague-ridden carcass out to vote because fuck the dickwigglers. Let’s see how exhausted that distance makes us!

We have also been sick long enough now that we are getting strategic about our nose blows and are converting our third bandanna into a work of Jackson Pollock art. If I converted the pattern into monochrome and did it over in nice ink, who would know?

I suppose if I don’t complain about people rewriting Hades and Persephone to be whatever they want, I shouldn’t complain about people rewriting Jesus to be whatever they want.

I read that post about “trans characters who never transition,” but I feel like transition is a story in and of itself. If I’m writing a story that isn’t about or connected to transition in some way, and there aren’t pornographic reasons to establish characters’ genitals, any of the characters could be trans and you’d never know.

I picked up Duet Night Abyss because of a sponsored video that said all characters can be gotten without spending money.

First, you obtain or craft consumable "secret letters" for each character. Each time you use a secret letter, you have to complete a challenge like "kill 100 enemies," and afterwards you have a chance to get some "thoughts" of the character. (Or you could get crafting items you don't care about instead.) Eventually you get enough thoughts that you can consume them to unlock a character. And you can do this all over again to upgrade characters' special abilities.

The video didn't mention this, but you can also buy characters with real money.

The joke's on the devs. I've been playing everything with the starter character.
